Everlast – The Life Acoustic (2013) FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 45:11 minutes | 511 MB Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks.com | Front cover Genre: Blues, Hip-Hop
The Life Acoustic is the newest album by House of Pain front-man Everlast. The songs on the album are from previous Everlast records that were largely ignored, re-done in an acoustic, stripped-down setting. There’s even an acoustic version of “Jump Around”, House of Pain’s most famous 1992 hit.
Everlast refashioned himself into a badass troubadour only a few years after pulling the plug on House of Pain, so his release of an all-acoustic album isn’t such a surprise (although it has to be said, the Wes Anderson parody of the title and artwork of The Life Acoustic is indeed a shock). Strictly speaking, the 12 songs on The Life Acoustic aren’t just Everlast-with-guitar. There are some subtle additions of keyboards or another six-string and, when he gets around to singing the immortal HOP song “Jump Around,” there’s a rhythm section, too. This stripped-down setting emphasizes some lingering blues and country influences lying within his songs — listen to the swinging skip of “My Medicine” — and sometimes it makes him seem like a bit of a sensitive singer/songwriter. Either way, his songs are served well in this intimate setting and the record also reveals Everlast has a deeper catalog than some might think.

Pharrell Williams – G I R L (2014) FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 47:00 minutes | 577 MB Official Digital Download – Source: ##buz | Front cover Genre: Neo Soul, Funk, R&B, Hip-Hop
Redefining cool for a new generation, Pharrell Williams is a creative force, using music, fashion, and design to express his distinctive style. With over 100 million copies of his productions sold, his music sounds like something no one else has thought of just yet. He’s also created a new way of looking at established stars like SnoopDogg, Madonna, and even the Rolling Stones. G I R L is Pharrell’s highly anticipated new album, and features the hit single, “Happy”, an international phenomenon and radio smash.
At some point between In My Mind and this album, tracking Pharrell’s accomplishments became more difficult than ever. His 2013 alone must be considered historic. That February, he accepted a Grammy for his role in Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange. March brought the release of Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” a Pharrell production that eventually topped the Hot 100. In April, there was Daft Punk’s Pharrell-fronted “Get Lucky,” a number two hit. From June through December, the Top Five of the Billboard 200 featured ten albums that involved him, including the number ones Random Access Memories, Blurred Lines, Magna Carta…Holy Grail, and Beyoncé. He subsequently earned seven additional Grammy nominations and took home three awards — presumably stowed in one of the compartments of his hat — the following January, including the one for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical. Just prior to the March 2014 release of G I R L, “Happy,” one of several songs he granted to the soundtrack of Despicable Me 2, topped the Hot 100. That carefree soul throwback appears here, almost smack in the middle. It doesn’t sound out of place in a set of upbeat, candy-coated pop-R&B that is relatively modern-sounding, laced with some elements of R&B from the mid- to late ’60s and that sweet late-’70s to early-’80s spot. One highlight that owes more to the past is “Gust of Wind,” a midtempo disco-funk Daft Punk collaboration filled with soaring strings and one of Pharrell’s most effectively wistful/yearning turns. On the sunny “Brand New,” he adds horns and shares vocals with Justin Timberlake, and they deal out some rare male self-objectification: “Like the tags still on me, jumpin’ ’round in your bag.” Much of the material is gentlemanly — appearances from Alicia Keys, Miley Cyrus, JoJo, and other women add to the approach — but this wouldn’t be a Pharrell album without some goofball moves. “Hunter,” like a funkier and tinnier take on what he did for Usher’s “Twisted,” is steeped in his charm-way-over-ability falsetto and cartoonish boasts with topical references. “Gush,” what sounds like an outtake from the first N.E.R.D. album plus strings, begins with “Make the pussy just gush” and references “Light Your Ass on Fire” while proclaiming “My mama didn’t raise me that way” somewhere between. Compared to his albums with N.E.R.D. and In My Mind, this is easily Pharrell’s second most enjoyable album, just behind the original version of In Search Of… from 2001. It’s fun, frivolous, and low on excess.

David Chesky – Rap Symphony (2014) FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 45:04 minutes | 458 MB Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks.com | Booklet Genre: Classical, Rap, Hip-hop
David Chesky’s Rap Symphony is about a transitional society, a society that is shifting from the word to the image. Our civilization once used to believe in depth and reading and art; now abstract thought is changing into a simplistic, superficial society where one is consumed with the quick Starbucks or Twitter fix. It’s all lightness of being today. We don’t celebrate anticipation anymore, people don’t want to put the time in. This symphony is about the collapse of that whole ethos.
The phrase in the lyrics that says ‘kill the philharmonic’ doesn’t mean that literally. It’s a metaphor for a society that has no use for the philharmonic. We’re losing these things. Pretty soon John Coltrane and Miles Davis, along with all jazz and classic music, will become museum pieces. We used to have a culture that cherished these, but in a super simplistic society, there’s just no room for them.

Theophilus London – Vibes (2014) FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 41:59 minutes | 483 MB | Genre: Hip-Hop Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Artwork: Front cover | Source: Qobuz
Trinidad born and Brooklyn raised New Yorker Theophilus London has been giving us great vibes over the years. His music, which encompasses everything from ghetto mythical fantasy to new wave landscapes along with his unique sense of style has landed him praise from fashion icons and brands alike. London, with the help of executive producer Kanye West, now releases his sophomore album Vibes on Warner Bros. Records. The album features appearances by Kanye West, Leon Ware, Devonte Hynes and more.
Theophilus London has to be doing something right to have Kanye West as his executive producer, soul legend Leon Ware as creative co-producer, and the Force M.D.’s, Devonte Hynes, and Jesse Boykins III as guest collaborators. Additionally, Karl Lagerfeld serves as art director and photographer for Vibes!, London’s second proper album. Timez Are Weird These Days, the artist’s debut housed in a Ware-emulating cover, lacked focus and was mostly surface with little depth. This offers measurable improvements across the board. Even when London muddles quasi-philosophical gibberish and pro-fellatio sentiments on “Water Me,” the hooks and basslines dig deeper. It’s more creative, too: “Neu Law” cleverly overhauls a decade-old droning synth-pop vignette by John Maus and is enhanced by Miri Ben-Ari’s gently cutting strings. London continues to craft frivolous tunes about playboy escapades. On “Do Girls,” where he performs his version of orientation conversion therapy on a woman, he cannonballs into a wading pool of inanity. Well above that, there’s the bopping “Need Somebody,” powered by help from Ware and the Force M.D.’s, and a chorus that oddly recalls that of Eric Burdon & War’s “Spill the Wine.” It casually lays waste to everything on Timez. The best bid for commercial radio play, however, is “Can’t Stop,” an adroit production from Club Cheval, Brodinski, and 88 Keys that features West in top lewd form. Best of all is the finale, “Figure It Out,” produced by Ware. Hynes and the Force M.D.’s also join in to make it one of the year’s finest slow jams, akin to an update of a top Ware ballad (like “Rockin’ You Eternally” or “Words of Love”) with sinewy low end.

Wu-Tang Clan – A Better Tomorrow (2014) FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 66:41 minutes | 770 MB | Genre: Hip-Hop, Rap Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Artwork: Front cover | Source: HDTracks
The legendary rap group Wu-Tang Clan, including RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa, and Cappadonna. As a group, Wu-Tang has sold over 6.5 million records in the US, while they’ve sold nearly 40 million records worldwide, including individual members’ album sales as well as group sales collectively. The group’s first release on the label will be the highly-anticipated 20th anniversary album, A Better Tomorrow. This will be the 1st release from the legendary group in 7 years.
Released along with Once Upon a Time in Shaolin — their locked-down, $5 million dollar, single-copy album-as-art release — A Better Tomorrow is further proof that, in 2014, the Wu-Tang Clan are a concept or collective led by RZA, and not necessarily a group. Their previous 2007 effort, 8 Diagrams, was the first clue that things would never be the same post-Ol’ Dirty Bastard, but they could be quite good, excellent even, as long as one doesn’t expect the lean, mean Shaolin machine of the past. Like 8 Diagrams, A Better Tomorrow seemed quite unlikely to see release with key member Raekwon being a vocal holdout, and here, the festival circuit, post-ODB Wu-Tang rolls on with little of that holdout’s help. Member Ghostface Killah is here less than usual as well, and when he’s in control of a cut, be brings in his frequent solo collaborator Adrian Younge, like on “Crushed Egos,” but it’s a highlight where RZA dives in fully, as if Ghostface’s noir LP Twelve Reasons to Die was a co-branded Bobby Digital effort. Insiders and longtime fans will get the drift, while everyone else has the group’s early albums for an intro, but solid, crossover appeal still comes in the form of the singles “Keep Watch” (a supreme, electro-powered Wu-Robot), “Ron O’Neal” (an organic, Roots-flavored funkster), and “Ruckus in B Minor” (a punchy history of the group with Rick Rubin adding some “99 Problems”-styled co-production). Backing up these frontline stunners are weighty album cuts like “Miracle,” where the group go big, ballad, and emo, which causes Ghostface to confess “since mama died, I never wild out,” then the rickety “Necklace” successfully adds indie rap to the LP’s many flavors, along with some venom and teeth. RZA executive produces to perfection, and somehow, orders this diverse, 15-song track list into a sensible flow. Don’t call it a comeback, call it a collective, or a compilation from solo artists who sound enthused to be back with an especially inspired RZA as ringleader.

Nobody’s Smiling is Common’s tenth studio album. The concept-driven project will be Executive Produced by No I.D. – who came of age in the ‘90s as producer of Common’s first three albums (on then-indie Relativity). “Common and I have a long history of making great music together,”said No I.D. “His rich legacy and robust talent are perfect additions to the Def Jam family. It’s particularly significant that he’s coming under our roof for his 10th album as a matured artist and cultural ambassador. It’s a tremendous boost for the spirit of Def Jam as well as the world of hip-hop.”
Nobody’s Smiling is the follow-up to 2011’s The Dreamer/The Believer and arrived on the 20th anniversary of Commonand No I.D.’s 1994 album Resurrection. The title track, “Nobody Smiling”, is inspired by his troubled hometown of Chicago. “We came up with this concept Nobody Smiling [and it] was really a thought that came about because of all the violence that was going on in Chicago, or that is going on in Chicago,” Common explained. Common hopes the music will serve as a call-to-action. The first single off new album is called “Kingdom,” which features Vince Staples.

Black Up is the new sonic move from Shabazz Palaces. Like rich velvet hijabs or gold threaded abayas. Luxury as understood by the modest. Shabazz Palaces. If Bedouins herded beats instead of goats and settled in Seattle instead of the Atlas Mountains, this would be their album. Forward thinkers but nostalgic for a sparer time when ancient astronomers only recognized five planets. Hip hop. Black light uses electromagnetic radiation to eradicate microorganisms, but shabazz didn’t come to kill a sound, just to shine their own incandescent lamp on this. Hear. Hard and clear.
